Winter conditions, Winter Solstice

Tuesday, December 20th, 2022

Wednesday, December 21st marks the first official day of winter.

Aside from the obvious snowfall, another weather item to be aware of this time of the year is black ice which is also known as clear ice. They are a very thin coating of ice on a surface and can be dangerous this time of year. The name black ice comes because typically the road itself is a tar road made of black tar. Ice itself is transparent and gets hidden by the color of the road. Unlike icy conditions in which you can typically see a gleam, a shine, a reflection, or what seems to be a wet spot – black ice blends in and is barely visible at times.

Ice and black ice produce the same risks so be sure to take extra care, especially in areas that have caution signs regarding icy conditions like “slippery when wet” or “bridge freezes before road”.

Safe travels!
